Shrimp AquaCulture in Punjab
Shrimp farming in Punjab was formally initiated in 2024 under the Punjab Fisheries Department. The initiative began with a successful pilot project spread over 100 acres in Muzaffargarh, where saline and barren land was utilized to produce shrimp at the local level for the first time. The project delivered positive results within a short period, and the shrimp produced proved suitable not only for domestic consumption but also for export markets. Following the success of the pilot project, the Government of Punjab launched a comprehensive development program for 2024–2028 aimed at establishing shrimp aquaculture as a well-organized, sustainable, and profitable industry. The program focuses on research and development, farmer training, establishment of hatcheries, feed production, processing units, and quality control facilities. Shrimp aquaculture represents a significant opportunity for Punjab by enabling productive use of saline and barren land, creating employment opportunities, earning foreign exchange, and promoting modern aquaculture technologies in the province.
